Why Waiting Isn’t Wasting
We spent some time this summer talking about Why Waiting Isn’t Wasting. The idea was largely born out of the nagging feeling some of us may have had that we wasted part of our life. We’re too late waking up to what God has for us. Maybe we’re getting a second rate version of God’s original plan for our lives. Together, we discovered that God uses seasons of waiting not as punishment, but as preparation - even if some of the waiting was largely from our own apathy or ignorance. Here’s a look back at what we covered:
Thriving in the Waiting
We began with Jeremiah 29:11, a verse many of us know by heart: “For I know the plans I have for you…” But this promise was first given to Israel when they were in Babylonian captivity—with no quick rescue in sight. God told His people not to simply survive, but to build, plant, and pray for the very city of their oppressors. Their well-being was tied to the well-being of Babylon. In the same way, our own thriving has connections to praying for and investing in our own cities, even while we wait for God’s promises to unfold.
Refining Your Focus
Waiting doesn’t mean spiritual passivity. Too often we can find ourselves in the “spiritual recliner,” hoping God will drop the answer into our laps. But biblical waiting is active—it’s leaning in, listening for God’s voice, and partnering with Him in the process. Real faith doesn’t cross its fingers; it sharpens its focus on the One who speaks life into our waiting.
Positioning Yourself for Breakthrough
We closed by seeing that delays are not denials. Instead, God often uses delay as a measuring tool to reveal what’s in our hearts. Delay exposes cracks in the foundation that, if ignored, could never support the weight of His promises. We looked at Elisha’s pursuit of a double portion from Elijah. Before God entrusted him with such weighty opportunity, He tested Elisha’s focus. Would he stay locked in on Elijah, or would the fiery spectacle of the chariots distract him? His steadfastness positioned him to receive the breakthrough.
The Big Takeaway
Seasons of waiting are never wasted when we see them through God’s eyes. One of the most significant places in scripture this year for me has been the story of the Israelites traveling towards the promised land and God promising that He will drive the occupants out “little by little.” Rather than a fast, sudden and total driving out of the Canaanites, He would instead go slow to give the Israelites time to settle the land, grow their population, and prevent the land from becoming desolate with dangerous wildlife. God’s plan was not for instant victory but gradual process that aligned with their capacity to grow and manage the land. This story has been teaching me that God’s plan for my life considers long-term consequences that I might not anticipate right off the cuff. Waiting is His tool to strengthen, refine, and prepare us for the future He has planned. You are not too late for God’s best. You haven’t missed your moment. Don’t live in regret—live in readiness. You are right on time and in a really good position for what God wants to do next.
Waiting is rarely easy, but God’s timing is never late. Whether in your family, career, or calling, keep sowing faithfully — the harvest is coming.
I’m believing that you’ll keep pressing forward and trusting God’s pace for your life this week.
